Cod trip til Stellwagan Bank

Heres some more photos from yesterdays cod trip to Stellwegan Bank. The day was beautiful, but wind was against a ripping tide. Tough to stay over a stack of cod when we found one. But….my Esca’s pulled thru. Pretty much the only one catching keepers. Here are a few photos, you must know the fish the other 2 guys are holding were mine!

Esca made it easy!

Here is Bill and Laura Boot from Pittsburg PA with their first stripers ever . Esca made it easy!

Esca’s really work!!!

Went out for a yearly Cod trip to Stellwagen Bank out of Green Harbor MA,April 18th. I had received my Esca’s a week or so previous and couldn’t wait to give them a try. Was a bit iffy about them, but what the heck you had a good brochure and write ups that made sense,so why not. Looked like I was fishing with a little computer on the line, but again, what the heck. Took a ribbing from the Capt and brother in law, high tech fishing! Anyway,we always get into the Cod pretty good on this trip but my fish were consistently, every drop and larger than the other guys were getting. I fished a Zigamajig on the bottom and the Esca (green) tied up the line as a teaser. Seemed the Zig was getting hit pretty good consistenly every drop,as soon as getting to the bottom. After a couple moves, into larger fish the Esca went to work. Pulled up a hunker, for sure the pool fish,on the Esca (teaser). Got the Capt and brother in law’s attention. Next drop, same fish (actually alittle bigger),same teaser. A week later we went back for another trip, same fish (actually alittle bigger),same teaser. Can’t wait to try them on Tuna!
Esca’s really work!!!

A doormat too soon

By Al Ristori
Dave Lilly of Hazlet didn’t find Raritan Bay striper trolling up to his recent standard of quick limits, but there was a rare highlight to the morning troll with Stretch plugs when Al Tumolo reeled in a doormat fluke that jumped on the Mann’s plug. The 28 1/4-inch fluke looked to be right around the 10-pound mark, and it broke Tumolo’s heart to have to relrease it —but the summer flounder season doesn’t open until Memorial Day weekend. That was his second doormat in a year,as Lilly put him into his first ever,a 13 1/2-pounder,late last summer. Four legal stripers up to my 23-pounder,were caught on baitcasting rods —along with a short and three blues.  Bob Croker of Old Bridge was in on the action.

Ocean striper fishing has been tough since Sunday, but Capt. Scotty Hilliard reported limit catches up to a 25-pounder by Mike Nagle of Atlantic Highlands,on his Prowler from Atlantic Highlands. Those bass were jigged under working birds to the east. Capt. Bud McArthur ran north of Manasquan Inlet with his Splinter from Brick, but found no sign of fish for jigging, and did nothing trolling. He said the water temperature was only 49 degrees at Manasquan Inlet, but jumped up to 56 degrees by the time he reached the Spring Lake Hotel.
Capt. Russ Binns found nothing from Manasquan Inlet south with his Mar-Lin from Toms River, but for the second week in a row he bailed out throwing poppers to bluefish in Barnegat Bay.

Trolling produces best results for stripers

Striped bass fishing along the Shore was picky today, but the ocean was flat before the poor weather predicted for Sunday. Trollers seemed to enjoy the best results. Dave Lilly of Hazlet ran his center console from Anglers Marine in Sea Bright to troll over 20 bass, including a 27-pounder that was weighed at The Tackle Box in Hazlet. Lilly used Stretch plugs rigged with Esca lights.

Capt. Hans Kaspersetz got to Shrewsbury Rocks very early with Sheri Berri from Baker’s Marina on the Bay in Highlands, and quickly trolled a limit.

Capt. Bud McArthur ran all the way from Brick to the Navy Pier, but didn’t find much with his Splinter until getting a call to come back south to Ocean Beach. Though he was late for the bite, his crew trolled a few bass and lots of blues. Some bunkers showed on the surface, and bass were caught by casting Krocodiles under the bunker.

Billy Dawson of Millington fished aboard the Sea Tiger II from Atlantic Highlands, but reported clamming was very slow —with only four keeper stripers on the boat. However,it was a good trip for Dawson as his 21 1/2-pounder ran away with the pool.

Capt. Sal Cursi of Cathy Sea from Sewaren reported good trolling between the channels as he
limited during Friday’s trip.

Mike Brusca Jr. trolled Stretch 25 plugs Friday afternoon off the Highlands Bridge to catch over 20 bass exceeding 30 inches in 50-to-60-foot depths.
